Drama Noir - A Necromancy Lore (Album Review In English)

"Pulvis Et Umbra Sumus (We're Dust And Shadow)"

~ Quintus Horatius Flaccus ~

An unprecedented summer somewhere here, comes to an end giving as a finale a dose of coolness and dark atmosphere where it consists of a taste of Peloponnese. I am obviously referring to the new and second series of Drama Noir entitled "A Necromancy Lore" which will be released on August 31 through the French record label Drakkar Productions. Finally, something that is very interesting and worth noting is the replacement of the vocals of Grigoris Varlas with that of Nyctelios (Synteleia).

An album that has a special aura in the beginning, as if it gives you the impression that you go back in time with the addition of Tasha ~ LadyAxe ~ Danzig of African descent, to give its own special touch, which makes you miss the great Diamanda Galas through her Amane Vocals.

What interests you is the alternation of the sound where we realize that Filth together with Borgir met and created this beautiful result and surely many people will wonder if what we hear is a Greek band or a remastering of an old album of great bands. So no, it is not Remastering, on the contrary, it is Drama Noir from Corinth and it plays the song Desert Draconidis.

The album has a great variety of sounds with the main denominator being Extreme Metal sound, the vocals matched very well with the atmosphere created by the keys as well as the guitar of Paul for whom this year was the golden age of music.

I would like to comment here on Luminous Seduction, which was uploaded as Single on Youtube through their company, while a very dark Album that brings to mind one of the first Gothic / Black Metal songs and I refer to "Cruelty And The Beast" of the British Veterans Cradle Of Filth. Amazing!

One piece that I have a lot of time left and makes me want to put it on Repeat is Devolution In The Curve Of Time. war guitar and characteristic playing by the legendary Bolt Thrower, in which one can see the ideas but also the experimentation regarding the sound of the band.

Definitely what is worth including in my description / opinion about the album, is that they can do a slight recycling of ideas from old school Gothic / Black Metal bands but try to develop their own sound with their own touches.

The addition of Thanasis Nanopoulos (Peisithanatos), was a perfect choice for the bass, because in the composition it gives a more intense note in terms of bass rhythm, something that stands out and gives an extra Bonus to the appreciation of each listener who likes Extreme Metal sound.

What you appreciate from my personal listening, is that the band is starting to move very strategically in terms of their subject matter and the mixing of languages that on the one hand you hear ancient Greek, on the other Latin and at the same time English, an idea that made me nostalgically long for the French symphonic Black Metallers, Anorexia Nervosa and more specifically Antinferno or even more aptly in my humble opinion, Track Of Moonspell Vampiria I am obviously referring to the change of languages!

The recording is at a very high level, with an excellent Mixing & Mastering that took place under the supervision of the founder of Acid Death Savvas Betinis, who proves that apart from being a very good musician / composer he is also very good in the role of sound engineer. Which turns out to be a very nice choice for the Mixing & Mastering track of the album. A toil that made a great round of Greece.

Overall I heard a very honest album that deserves to be heard above and supported by the Wide Metal audience, with many perspectives and a sound that is part of a maturity of the synthetic track, which shows us that they know what and how they want to move in composition of music. They search, dare and have a long future ahead of them if they collect their influences correctly as well as if there is chemistry and that is something I see in Drama Noir.

My only objection, which I justify because we are talking about a band that was created 3 years ago, is that you have to look a little more in the part of Cult and combine the Old School with more modern touches. Anyway, for so many years of life, the band is on the right track and we have to recognize that!

Finally, I could not miss the excellent work of the well-known from his artistic pantheon in the Greek Underground scene (Hail Spirit Noir, Fovitron, Kawir, Agnes Vein, FreeFall, Kemerov, Syneteleia, etc.), the reason for Nikos Tsiolis, is a great talent in graphic design, that if you look carefully at the cover, Lilith painted it so gothic, perfectly marrying the colors between them. An unprecedented touch that is worth noting, is in the hands of the woman where instead of flames, red smoke comes out which hides occult symbolism, which shows me her call to the castle that she wants to bring us and a ritual and Concept that brings you strongly mind images from Video Games like the beloved Castlevania.

The album will be released on August 31 on Digital, Vinyl and on a regular CD. It is the 2nd album from the Peloponnesian Drama Noir and is here to give you their own stamp with which we are preparing to welcome autumn. So light candles, let the Sun set, turn off the lights and enjoy "A Necromancy Lore" as it deserves!
